A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Concepts and mechanisms
Software-security effectiveness is a claim about defined properties under stated conditions. Connect requirements and threat paths to test evidence, code changes, review and production behavior. A passed unit test can cover one function without proving every API or state transition is secure. Coverage metrics describe what was exercised; high percentages can coexist with missing important cases.
Design, evidence and tradeoffs
Analyze findings in deployment context, assign correction and residual-risk decisions, and retest. Protect audit records of consequential changes. Test permitted and denied behavior, error paths and tenant boundaries with controlled data. Monitor relevant production signals and feed incidents into design and tests. Do not use build success or tool count as a substitute for the intended security outcome.
Worked example
A regression test checks both the owner’s allowed invoice access and rejection of another tenant after an authorization fix.
Check your understanding
What does a rising test-coverage percentage not prove?
Show explanation
It does not establish that the tests assert the right properties, exercise material failure paths or demonstrate complete security.
