A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Original academy illustrations and fictional exercises. These are learning simulations, not a real virtual machine, network assessment or measure of job readiness. Activities reset when you leave or reload; they do not change quiz scores.

What this chapter explains

Concepts and mechanisms

Process evidence can include access approvals, account lifecycle records, management review, backup verification, awareness outcomes and continuity exercises. Its reliability depends on source, completeness, accuracy, period and access protection. A spreadsheet of completed tasks can omit missing transactions; an automated extract can have incorrect filters or incomplete sources.

Design, evidence and tradeoffs

Define the population independently where possible, reconcile data and record extraction methods. Distinguish activity counts from control effectiveness and risk indicators. Do not collect confidential records beyond the authorized purpose. A dashboard’s precision does not remove uncertainty in underlying data. Link evidence to the assertion being tested so a reviewer can understand both the supported conclusion and its limits.

Worked example

A departure review starts with the personnel departure population and reconciles it to application records rather than sampling only closed tickets.

Check your understanding

What can a large sample from an incomplete population fail to correct?

Show explanation

Sampling more of the same incomplete source does not establish the missing population or its unrecorded failures.
