Concept matching activity

Match this task or description to its concept:

Enforce object and action authorization.

Choose a concept before checking the explanation.

Data-versus-instruction sandbox

A fictional search value contains an apostrophe. Choose how the application passes it to the database. No query is executed.

Combined text: SELECT name FROM records WHERE owner = 'O'Neil'

The value is mixed with query syntax, producing ambiguous or invalid query text and creating an injection risk.

Parameterized interfaces preserve the data boundary when used correctly. Also enforce authorization and database least privilege; parameter binding does not provide either automatically.

A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Original academy illustrations and fictional exercises. These are learning simulations, not a real virtual machine, network assessment or measure of job readiness. Activities reset when you leave or reload; they do not change quiz scores.

What this chapter explains

Concepts and mechanisms

Secure coding translates requirements into safe handling of identity, authorization, input, output, state, secrets and errors. Parameterized database operations separate values from query structure when correctly used; contextual output encoding protects a rendering boundary; validation enforces acceptable form and business rules. These controls are complementary, not interchangeable. Memory-safe designs, appropriate resource handling and dependency management address other failure classes.

Design, evidence and tradeoffs

Enforce resource-level authorization on every relevant API path, including background and export operations. Protect session lifecycle and do not place secrets in client artifacts or logs. Use safe error handling without hiding material failures from authorized monitoring. Peer review and testing should include misuse cases and concurrency or state transitions where relevant. Generated code receives the same scrutiny as handwritten code, and framework defaults should be verified in the deployed configuration.

Worked example

An API hides an export button but still returns another tenant’s record. The correction is server-side resource authorization, not a different interface label.

Check your understanding

Why is input validation not a complete substitute for parameterized queries?

Show explanation

Restricting input does not necessarily prevent it being interpreted as query syntax; the structural trust boundary should be enforced.
