A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

What this chapter explains

Concepts and mechanisms

Professional ethics constrains both the objective and method of security work. Protect people and legitimate interests, act honestly and lawfully, perform work competently and support the profession; consult the authoritative ISC2 Code of Ethics for its exact canons and application. Organizational codes add context but do not automatically remove professional obligations. Due diligence concerns appropriate inquiry and evaluation; due care concerns prudent action on the resulting understanding.

Design, evidence and tradeoffs

Competence includes recognizing the limits of authority and expertise. An assessor should distinguish an observed failure from a hypothesis and disclose conflicts that affect independence. A security qualification does not authorize testing an unrelated service. Preserve evidence and use the approved escalation route when asked to conceal a material finding. Management can make decisions within its authority, but cannot make a false assessment true by preferring a green status.

Worked example

A designer performs an internal review of their own control and reports it as author review, not independent assurance.

Why does professional competence include reporting uncertainty?

Show explanation

A decision-maker needs to know what the evidence supports and what it does not; hidden uncertainty can produce an unjustified decision.
