A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Concepts and mechanisms
Vulnerability management identifies relevant assets and weaknesses, validates findings, prioritizes context, selects treatment and verifies results. Patching is one treatment activity within that lifecycle. A base score helps triage but does not establish every deployment’s reachability, business importance or compensating controls. Unsupported assets may need replacement or owned temporary safeguards.
Design, evidence and tradeoffs
Test compatibility, authorize deployment, define rollback or recovery, verify the resulting condition and monitor recurrence. Emergency corrections still need accountable review and records. Track the affected population so remediation does not fix one host while leaving equivalent instances exposed. A closed ticket or installed package record is weaker than evidence that the vulnerable condition is corrected and required service behavior continues.
Worked example
A critical patch is deferred for an industrial system under an approved temporary restriction and a dated replacement plan.
Check your understanding
Why should patch status and vulnerability status not be treated as identical?
Show explanation
A weakness can depend on configuration or remain on other assets, while some treatments reduce exposure without being a software patch.
