A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

What this chapter explains
- Concepts and mechanisms
- Design, evidence and tradeoffs
- Legal issue spotting without assuming one jurisdiction
Concepts and mechanisms
Security architecture operates within obligations associated with entities, activities, locations, contracts and information. Privacy concerns appropriate processing as well as protection from outsiders. Intellectual-property and software-license conditions can constrain copying, distribution or use of components and data. Cross-border flows, import/export restrictions and sector obligations require qualified interpretation. A voluntary standard is not automatically a law, while a contract can create duties beyond a generic security checklist.
Design, evidence and tradeoffs
Maintain an applicability record connecting the obligation, owner, version, effective period, control and evidence. Use authorized legal or compliance expertise for conflicting requirements and investigations. Do not apply one country’s reporting deadline universally or assume a corporate policy waives a local duty. For AI services, examine permitted data and model use, retention and supplier terms without uploading sensitive evidence into unapproved tools.
Legal issue spotting without assuming one jurisdiction
Investigate privacy obligations, intellectual-property and software licensing, import/export restrictions, cross-border transfers and breach obligations with appropriate legal expertise. GDPR, California privacy law, China’s Personal Information Protection Law and South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act are distinct regimes, not interchangeable labels. Jurisdiction, role, contract and processing purpose determine applicability. A cloud region selection alone does not resolve every transfer issue. Record the relevant requirements and accountable advice; this lesson does not prescribe a universal notification deadline or replace current legal guidance.
Worked example
A company checks both the license of an acquired component and its security provenance before distributing a product that contains it.
Check your understanding
Does protecting data with encryption establish that its collection and reuse are lawful?
Show explanation
No. Purpose, lawful authority, permissions, transparency and other applicable duties remain separate questions requiring appropriate review.
