Access-decision sandbox
Try to edit a fictional record as a reader. Then change one condition and evaluate again. This simplified policy requires authentication, object scope and action permission; real policies have more conditions.
Change the request, then evaluate it.
A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.
Original academy illustrations and fictional exercises. These are learning simulations, not a real virtual machine, network assessment or measure of job readiness. Activities reset when you leave or reload; they do not change quiz scores.

Concepts and mechanisms
Federation allows a relying service to use identity assertions from a trusted issuer under a defined relationship. It is not automatic trust in every token. Validate issuer, intended audience, cryptographic protection, validity, relevant claims and protocol conditions. OAuth supports delegated authorization; OpenID Connect adds an identity layer for authentication uses. SAML supports assertion-based federation in suitable designs. The protocol and flow must match the intended purpose.
Design, evidence and tradeoffs
On-premises, cloud and hybrid arrangements introduce different connectivity and operational dependencies. Evaluate account linking, provisioning, deprovisioning, session revocation, key changes and issuer outage. A valid external identity still needs local authorization. Record who owns incident response and customer data handling across the relationship. Test rejected audiences and inappropriate claims as well as the happy-path login.
Worked example
An API rejects a correctly signed token intended for another application rather than accepting every token from a familiar issuer.
Check your understanding
Why is signature validation alone insufficient for federation?
Show explanation
A token can be genuine but expired, intended for another audience or inappropriate for the requested operation.
