A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Original academy illustrations and fictional exercises. These are learning simulations, not a real virtual machine, network assessment or measure of job readiness. Activities reset when you leave or reload; they do not change quiz scores.

What this chapter explains

Concepts and mechanisms

A read-through or tabletop checks understanding and decisions. A walkthrough examines responsibilities and execution paths. Simulations exercise selected actions under controlled conditions. Parallel arrangements can evaluate a recovery environment alongside production, while full interruption introduces much greater operational consequence. Names alone do not establish exactly what was performed; define the scope and evidence.

Design, evidence and tradeoffs

Choose a method for the capability being claimed and obtain appropriate impact authorization. Specify objectives, participants, timing, observers, communication, safety and stop criteria. A successful discussion does not demonstrate an unperformed timed restore. Record failures honestly and assign owners and retests. Communicate to affected stakeholders and applicable specialist functions according to the test plan.

Recovery test progression and disruption

A read-through checks the documented plan; a tabletop discusses decisions. A walkthrough examines practical steps, and a simulation models selected conditions. A parallel test exercises recovery capability alongside production; a full-interruption test deliberately interrupts production and has greater operational risk. Select the method for the objective and authorization, communicate status to stakeholders and record limitations. Passing a discussion exercise does not prove recovery capacity or data integrity. Feed results into training, plan updates and later evidence-based retesting.

Worked example

A tabletop reveals unclear supplier shutdown authority but does not claim to have measured technical recovery speed.

Check your understanding

Why should the most disruptive test not automatically be considered the best choice?

Show explanation

Its consequence may be unjustified for the objective; the method must provide useful evidence within acceptable and authorized conditions.
