A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Original academy illustrations and fictional exercises. These are learning simulations, not a real virtual machine, network assessment or measure of job readiness. Activities reset when you leave or reload; they do not change quiz scores.

What this chapter explains

Concepts and mechanisms

Handling requirements translate classification into approved collection, access, storage, transmission, reproduction, sharing, retention and disposal. Distinguish the required outcome from a particular tool. Encryption can protect a data state but does not make an unauthorized recipient appropriate. A masked view does not remove the unmasked source or every re-identification risk.

Design, evidence and tradeoffs

Include users, custodians, suppliers and automated processing. Define what data may enter test, support or AI services, and how exceptions are approved. Verify procedures against actual copies and flows instead of only a policy document. Requirements must fit applicable obligations and legal holds. Tailor controls to the sensitivity and use, recording why deviations are acceptable under the relevant authority.

Worked example

A support workflow uses synthetic records because a copied production dataset is unnecessary for reproducing the defect.

Check your understanding

Why should handling rules cover a troubleshooting archive?

Show explanation

It is another copy with its own access, retention and disclosure paths, even if it is outside the primary application.
