A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

What this chapter explains

Management concept and decision mechanism

Incident communication needs identified audiences, authority, timing, channels and information requirements. Analysts, service owners, executives, suppliers, customers and regulators need different detail. Separate confirmed facts, working hypotheses and next update time. Protect sensitive evidence and avoid speculation about a real person or attacker. External notification decisions require applicable obligations and authorized specialist input; no single deadline or complete-root-cause rule applies universally. Prepare alternate channels and approval routes in advance so a disrupted messaging or identity platform does not block critical coordination.

Plan eradication, recovery, and communications

After effective containment, identify and address the compromise path and affected scope. Authorized actions may include removing persistence, correcting exposed configurations, replacing affected components, or rotating compromised credentials. Choose actions based on the investigation and business consequences; do not destroy needed evidence merely to make the service appear clean.

Define who needs updates, which facts they need, who approves the message, and which channels remain available. Coordinate legal or contractual notification assessment with the responsible specialists. Before returning to normal operation, verify recovery integrity, required controls, usable business service, and monitoring for recurrence.

Worked example

A concise executive update states the affected service, known consequence, containment decision, uncertainty and next decision point without distributing raw personal data.

Check your understanding

Why can waiting for a complete investigation be an unsuitable notification rule?

Show explanation

Some applicable triggers or business needs require action before all details are known; the authorized process must evaluate them.
