A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

What this chapter explains
- Management concept and decision mechanism
- Recover with decision criteria
Management concept and decision mechanism
Eradication addresses the condition enabling or maintaining the incident, including vulnerable configuration, persistence and exposed identities. Recovery restores an approved service state and validates its data, dependencies and monitoring. A clean malware scan does not revoke stolen sessions or supplier credentials. A rebuilt host can be compromised again if the access path remains. Define return-to-service criteria, verification, rollback conditions and heightened monitoring. Reconcile affected business transactions through appropriate owners and preserve evidence needed for the investigation and retained obligations.
Recover with decision criteria
Address the cause of compromise and validate the recovery environment before returning the service to normal operation. Coordinate restoration priorities with business owners and monitor for recurrence. Restoration of a server does not by itself prove the service is trustworthy or usable.
Communications should distinguish confirmed facts from estimates and unknowns. Use approved channels and spokespersons. Have the responsible specialists assess applicable notification obligations; timing and recipients depend on the facts and governing requirements, not a universal deadline.
Worked example
A restored payment service is not returned to normal until exposed administration sessions are revoked, configuration is verified and affected transactions are reconciled.
Check your understanding
What is wrong with declaring recovery complete when a server answers requests?
Show explanation
Availability of one endpoint does not establish trusted configuration, complete business data or removal of the surviving access path.
