A quick way to study this topic
  1. Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
  2. Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
  3. Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
  4. Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

What you will learn

Concepts and distinctions

Management review brings together evidence needed to decide whether the ISMS remains appropriate and effective. It should connect performance, audit results, changes, objectives and unresolved issues to actions and resources. A meeting held on schedule is not sufficient evidence that decisions were made or followed through.

A correction addresses the immediate condition; corrective action addresses why the condition occurred and whether it could recur elsewhere. Resetting a terminated user’s account permissions fixes one case. Investigating why departure notifications were missed can reveal a wider handoff failure. Root-cause reasoning should be supported by evidence rather than automatically blaming one employee or prescribing more awareness training.

Apply the process and collect evidence

Record decisions, owners, due dates and evidence of follow-up. After corrective action, test whether the process now performs as intended over a suitable period. Reopen the issue if the change is ineffective. Improvement can be proportionate and iterative; the aim is better capability, not merely closing tickets before an external assessment.

Corrective action, fraud indicators and verified follow-up

A correction repairs the observed instance, while corrective action addresses why it occurred and seeks to prevent recurrence. Assign an owner and due date, investigate causes, implement proportionate action and evaluate effectiveness with later evidence. Uploading a revised procedure is not enough when the problem was staff access to an obsolete workflow. Follow-up may need a later operating sample rather than a same-day document review.

The fraud triangle is a useful analytical prompt about pressure, opportunity and rationalization; it is not an ISO 27001 certification requirement, proof of fraud or a replacement for objective audit evidence. An unusual override may justify further authorized inquiry, not an accusation. Separate allegations from findings, preserve relevant evidence and escalate through agreed governance and legal channels. Management owns corrective actions; auditors evaluate their adequacy and effectiveness without taking over the process they later assess.

Work through a scenario

Fictional facts for learning. This exercise is not scored.

Three departure reviews find accounts still active. Each ticket is closed after disabling the named account, but the same issue returns the next month.

Compare your reasoning

The immediate corrections were useful but did not resolve the recurring handoff failure. Investigate notifications, ownership, service accounts and validation steps. Implement a justified change and test subsequent departures before declaring the corrective action effective.
