A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

Concepts and distinctions
Internal audit and management review evaluate the AI management system, not merely a model’s benchmark score. Audit criteria, scope, competence, impartiality and evidence should be appropriate to the organization’s activities. A record showing that an AI policy exists does not prove that approvals, impact reviews or supplier handoffs operate as intended.
Review should connect monitoring, findings, changes, objectives and unresolved issues to decisions and resources. Corrective action should investigate causes and check whether the chosen response works. Replacing a form after every repeated failure can create a growing document library while leaving the operational handoff unchanged.
Apply the process and collect evidence
Trace findings to evidence and criteria, assign accountable actions and evaluate effectiveness after implementation. Keep appropriate records of decisions and acknowledged limitations. Integrate common management practices with an existing ISMS where useful, while preserving AI-specific risk, impact and lifecycle needs. Organization-level certification and personal qualifications remain separate from completing this independent foundation course.
Corrective-action evaluation and the continuing audit programme
Ask whether an action plan identifies a cause, accountable owner, suitable action, timescale and effectiveness test. Distinguish immediate correction of a missing record from systemic prevention of repeat omissions. An auditor evaluates the response without becoming the control owner. Closure should use objective evidence at an appropriate later point, not just an assurance that a policy will be updated.
Manage an internal audit programme over time using risk, change, coverage, past results and auditor competence. Surveillance and recertification assess continued conformity under the certification scheme; maintain governance between visits. Review whether monitoring and audit results lead to meaningful management decisions. For study, rehearse a plan, sample, test, finding, closing summary and follow-up case; any provider examination requires its own published preparation and qualification rules.
| Concept | What to remember |
|---|---|
| Assurance | Evaluate evidence against defined management criteria |
| Management review | Make accountable decisions from the evidence |
| Improvement | Address causes and verify effectiveness |
Worked example
Three AI releases bypass the same impact-review gate. The team updates the checklist each time but cannot show that release permissions or approval responsibilities changed. Investigate why the gate can be bypassed, change the responsible process or enforcement where justified, and test later releases. A revised checklist is an artifact; effectiveness requires evidence that the workflow now performs the intended review.
Check your understanding
What best demonstrates effective corrective action after repeated release-gate bypasses?
Show explanation
Evidence that a cause-based change prevents or detects the failure in later releases. Effectiveness depends on changed operating capability rather than only revised documents.
