A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.

What this chapter explains
- Management concept and decision mechanism
- Choose an exercise that can support the claimed result
Management concept and decision mechanism
Choose an exercise to test a defined capability: contact availability, decision authority, evidence handling, containment or technical recovery. A tabletop examines discussion and coordination; operational simulations and restore tests evaluate different behavior. Specify scope, safety limits, injects, observers, success criteria and evidence before starting. A useful exercise can expose a failure. Assign corrective actions, owners and retests rather than changing criteria retrospectively so every result appears successful. Protect participants and sensitive information while sharing the operational lessons with the roles that need them.
Choose an exercise that can support the claimed result
A checklist review can identify missing plan elements; a tabletop can test understanding and decisions; a controlled simulation can test coordinated actions. An operational restoration test can measure recovery capability within its defined scope. None of these formats automatically proves every aspect of production readiness.
For each exercise, define an objective, participants, authorization, constraints, observation method, and evidence needed. Capture actual outcomes and turn gaps into owned corrective actions. Retest the changed capability before closing a material finding, and retain the limits of the exercise in leadership reporting.
Worked example
A tabletop identifies an unavailable supplier contact; a follow-up exercise validates the corrected escalation route rather than only distributing revised minutes.
Check your understanding
What does a successful tabletop not establish by itself?
Show explanation
It does not prove unperformed technical restoration times, operating configurations or complete response performance in a live incident.
