What you will learn
- Explain addressing, transport ports and protected connections.
- Use segmentation and layered controls to limit exposure.
- Distinguish cloud service models and shared responsibilities.
Describe the path a request takes
IP addresses support delivery between network endpoints. Transport ports distinguish services on an endpoint; a reachable port suggests a listening service, not automatically a vulnerability. Name resolution translates a service name into addressing information. Network models help describe where a problem occurs, but no single layer supplies all security.
A firewall permits or denies traffic according to its configured rules. A virtual private network protects a tunnel between defined endpoints; it does not prove that either endpoint is safe. Encrypted web connections protect data in transit when correctly established, but they do not correct an application’s broken permissions.
Limit movement and verify access
Segmentation separates systems into controlled areas, for example guest wireless and finance systems. Rules between segments should allow necessary communication and block unnecessary paths. A segment name alone is not enforcement; verify which traffic actually crosses the boundary.
Defense in depth combines controls such as patching, authentication, restricted network paths and monitoring. Zero trust avoids granting access solely because a request comes from inside a network. Evaluate the identity, requested resource and relevant context. AI development systems and connected devices should receive only their necessary paths, rather than broad access to business records.
Share responsibility explicitly
With infrastructure as a service, customers commonly manage operating systems and applications while the provider manages underlying infrastructure. A platform service removes more runtime management; a software service provides an application. The exact division depends on the service and agreement, so inspect the responsibility matrix instead of assuming all cloud services are alike.
Customers still need to configure their identities, sharing settings and use of data appropriately. A provider’s physical security does not prevent a customer from sharing a storage object publicly. Private, public and hybrid describe deployment arrangements rather than a guarantee of security.
Work through a scenario
Fictional facts for learning. This exercise is not scored.
A guest wireless network can reach the finance database port. The database requires a password. Is the guest network sufficiently separated?
Compare your reasoning
No. Authentication is useful but does not replace a necessary network boundary. Confirm the intended paths with the owner, restrict guest access to required destinations and test the rule. Keep database authentication and monitoring as additional layers.

Picture the topic
Remember this: An address finds a destination; identity establishes who.
Explore the anchors
Request a service such as name resolution.
Concept matching activity
Match this task or description to its concept:
Use TCP or UDP endpoints.
Choose a concept before checking the explanation.
Request-path simulator
Follow a simplified HTTPS request. A valid protected connection still needs application authorization. This walkthrough performs no real network traffic.
- Resolve the service name ← current step
- Route to the service endpoint
- Establish transport
- Validate TLS peer identity
- Authorize the application record
- Return permitted data
Ready for the next stage.
DNS caching, proxies, connection reuse and transport variants can change the real sequence. This model separates responsibilities; it does not assign TLS to one exact OSI layer.
A quick way to study this topic
- Hide the explanation and redraw these three anchors from memory.
- Explain the difference between the anchors in your own words.
- Apply the distinction to the worked example below. Check the full lesson for assumptions and exceptions.
- Recall it again tomorrow, then after a few days. A memory hint is a retrieval cue, not a replacement for understanding.
Original academy illustrations and fictional exercises. These are learning simulations, not a real virtual machine, network assessment or measure of job readiness. Activities reset when you leave or reload; they do not change quiz scores.

Understand what network controls actually inspect
A port identifies a transport endpoint, not a guarantee of the application or user behind it. Encryption protects traffic content but can reduce the visibility of a device that lacks authorized decryption. A virtual LAN creates a logical segment; its security depends on routing and enforcement between segments. A virtual private network protects an approved connection, but a compromised remote endpoint can still send harmful traffic through it. Read the permitted source, destination, protocol and purpose together. Zero trust means evaluating access rather than trusting a request solely because it came from an internal address.
Assign responsibility in the chosen cloud service
In infrastructure services the customer commonly manages guest operating systems and application configuration; a managed application shifts more platform work to the provider. The exact contract and service define the boundary. Customer identities, sharing settings and data handling remain important in either model. A cloud provider’s certification does not demonstrate that a customer storage bucket is private. Keep inventories of accounts and connected devices, including systems that cannot be patched safely during business hours. Isolate such devices, restrict administration and plan maintenance or replacement with their owners.
Evidence case
Fictional facts for learning; no real organization or person is described.
- A company stores support attachments in a managed cloud application. The supplier maintains the servers.
- A customer reports that an attachment is visible through a public sharing link created by a company employee.
Your task
- Identify the responsibility that requires investigation.
- Choose evidence to check before concluding that the supplier platform failed.
Compare with the model answer
Review the tenant’s sharing policy, the object’s access settings and the creation record for the public link. Supplier responsibility for servers does not remove the customer’s responsibility to configure authorized sharing. Restrict the exposed link under the response process, preserve relevant access evidence and determine the data affected. Confirm the service agreement before assigning ownership of any platform defect. Test the corrected sharing policy with approved synthetic attachments.

Remember
- Reachability, encryption and permission are different questions.
- Verify segmentation through actual allowed and denied paths.
- Cloud responsibilities depend on the chosen service and agreement.
